Allstate Lists Top Cities for Auto Accidents. New York Ranks Where?

Allstate Insurance Company recently issued a report-based on property damage claims the company obtained between January 2008 and December 2009-detailing the top cities where auto accidents are likely to occur. One such startling statistic reveals that drivers in Washington, D.C. are 100 percent more likely to get into a car crash than a typical American driver. So what other cities boast high on the list? Surprisingly-and fortunately-New York City does not.

Allstate deduced from the data that drivers who live in cities with populations of over one million have a higher chance than the national average of being involved in a car crash. (Understandably this is why Washington D.C. ranks high.) Baltimore, Maryland; Newark, New Jersey; Providence, Rhode Island; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and Glendale, California. Alexandria, Virginia also made the top-ten cut, but New York City was rated as the top 20 city for the worst drivers.

Much smaller cities, according to Allstate, host the safest drivers. Fort Collins, Colorado; Boise, Idaho; Lincoln, Nebraska; Chandler, Arizona; and Huntsville, Alabama are listed as the safest cities to drive.

The data falls short of reasoning why top cities like LA or New York do not rank high on the list despite their high population density, however, some Wappinger's Falls' car accident lawyers say drivers-and pedestrians alike-should still remain wary of vehicles because neither city, unfortunately, is listed in the top ten for the safest drivers.

Nationwide, vehicle accidents and fatalities have actually dropped over the years. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 10.2 million motor vehicle accidents occurred in 2008 in the U.S.-less than today's numbers.

However, despite the decline, public awareness, updated regulations and technological advances will still be needed to help combat these accidents and fatalities.
